Seimac Ltd / N.A.T. Distress Beacon

The Challenge:

DW was asked to assist Seimac Ltd. of Halifax to develop an affordable 406MHz EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) to be used for boaters in distress. This tracking device outputs precise GPS positioning information for satellites and a proximity homing signal for rescue aircraft.

Accomplishments:
• meets exacting standards including extreme operating temp. ranges, impact performance, UV exposure and water ingress integrity
• product architecture was simplified for longevity with a single threaded seal
• materials recommendation for longevity and successful test performance
• double compartment hull allows for users to change batteries without the need for recertification
• the resulting product met the extremely competitive cost target goal

Responsibilities: Industrial design, material selection recommendations, determining overall product architecture and configuration for durability and waterproofness.
